Universal meters, multimeters - the most widespread measuring devices

Universal meters, or multimeters, are the most common measuring devices. Together with voltage detectors and clamp meters, they are a group of tools that practically every electrician has come into contact with. This is really due to the versatility, affordable price, reliability and ease of use. We asked Bartosz Fijałkowski - Product Manager of SONEL S.A. - to answer some questions about multimeters.

Is a multimeter really universal? Can it replace other specialised meters?

Absolutely yes! The multimeter is a versatile device and guarantees a wide range of applications. However, it is important to bear in mind that one multimeter is never the same as the other multimeter. Typically, more expensive models offer more measuring and additional functions. When looking at the SONEL product range, each type, starting from Sonel CMM-10 through Sonel CMM-11, Sonel CMM-30, Sonel CMM-40 and ending with Sonel CMM-60 offers more than its predecessor. This also applies to the durability and protection of the device and the user. Hence, a simple reflection arises - the higher the model, the more universal it is. The multimeter can replace specialised measuring devices, provided that we do not need very precise results or wide ranges. This makes us understand that expensive equipment has a cheaper alternative when our needs are not particularly high.

In what cases can such meters be used, for what measurements can they be used?

In each case, where basic measurements are needed, such as AC/DC voltages, AC/DC currents, resistance, capacitance, frequency, as well as more focused on specific situations such as: LowZ (low impedance voltage measurement), AC DC voltage measurement, or built-in recorder. Safety and convenience should always be kept in mind. SONEL's new-look multimeters have Bluetooth communication with the Sonel Multimeter Mobile app. These are Sonel CMM-11, Sonel CMM-30 and Sonel CMM-60. They give you the convenience of viewing the measurement results on your phone, away from the device, and partial control of your meter. Such action is also intended to limit the presence of the user near the multimeter, and thus the elements that are under dangerous voltage, reducing the risk of accidental electric shock.

What should I pay particular attention to when deciding whether to purchase such a device? Which of the parameters are most important for professional use?

The most important aspect when choosing a multimeter is to determine our needs. When we need basic functions, the simplest meter will suffice. The price aspect will come into play here, and I sincerely advise against cheap devices of unknown origin. SONEL multimeters meet all design requirements in terms of safety and electromagnetic compatibility required in our country and the EU. In addition, each meter is checked and receives a document confirming its operation and compliance with the declared measurement uncertainties.
Professionals when choosing a multimeter are mainly focused on accuracy, range and resolution. The measurement category, warranty period and service availability are also important. Professionals buy professional meters that last for years of use.

What are the most common mistakes that users make when measuring electricity, and especially with this type of meters?

The most common mistake resulting from routine or inexperience is taking measurements with the incorrect measurement function selected. It is worth mentioning here that SONEL multimeters are equipped with current and voltage protections, so such an accident will not damage the meter or harm the user's health. This is not standard in the case of low-cost devices, where such a situation may result in injury to the operator's hands or eyes.

What is the technical difference between cheap and expensive device? Does cheap mean bad?

It should be emphasized that a cheap multimeter is not always bad, but due to the price it must simply be less advanced. Sonel CMM-10 is the basic meter available made by SONEL. The more expensive Sonel CMM-11 guarantees greater impact strength and a higher degree of water and dust resistance, as well as an additional features such as a built-in flashlight. The Sonel CMM-30 will not be damaged by accidental diving in a puddle or mud in any way, thanks to its rugged IP67-rated housing. Sonel CMM-60 is equipped with a built-in recorder, a colour display, option to play back stored time waveforms and more measurement options.

In summary, the more expensive multimeter offers a wider range of applications. In case the user does not need such high functionality, why not buy a cheaper meter? A cheap multimeter is also good, as long as there is a trusted manufacturer behind it. Safety first!
